Only two deputies voted out of the nearly 3,000 members of parliament who cast their ballots in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, according to Reuters.
The deputies of the National People’s Congress (NPC) re-elected Xi Jinping unanimously for the post of president of the People’s Republic of China for another five-year term.
The election of the head of state was held Saturday morning at the fifth plenary session of the first session of the 13th National People’s Congress of China by secret ballot.
On Sunday, the parliament agreed to amend the constitution to abolish restrictions on presidential terms, meaning that Shi could remain president indefinitely.
Chinese President Xi Jinpig expressed hope that North Korea would be disarmed through talks between the two countries and the United States.
