At the UN Security Council meeting on the extension of the resolution on the ban on arms shipments to Yemen, Russia, after vetoing the draft British anti-Iranian resolution presented under pressure from the United States has succeeded in passing its resolution.

Russia vetoed the British anti-Iranian draft resolution at the UN Security Council, an act that provoked the anger of the United States. The Russian veto is a defeat for the United States, which has lobbied for months to hold Iran accountable to the United Nations, Reuters reported.

However, the 15 members of the Security Council unanimously approved the resolution proposed by Moscow, which did not mention Iran, simply by extending the one-year arms embargo against Yemen.

The United Kingdom had drafted a resolution, in consultation with France and the United States. According to Reuters, the initial draft text – to renew the annual mandate of a sanctions regime against Yemen – wanted to include a condemnation of Iran for violating the arms embargo.

In fact, if it was a defeat for the United States and the United Kingdom, this meeting of the Security Council was the occasion of two victories for Russia. First, Moscow vetoed the British draft resolution supported by France. This resolution was aimed at Iran. But for Russia, the UN report did not prove the direct involvement of Iran. Second, after the veto of this resolution, Russia has proposed its own draft resolution that maintains Yemeni sanctions for an additional year, but does not allow any action against Iran.

“If Russia continues to support Iran, the United States and our partners will have to act alone,” US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley told reporters during a visit to Tegucigalpa, Honduras’ capital. Haley did not say what kind of action could be taken.

Referring to the decision of the Security Council, Nikki Haley added that this vote would not affect the decision on the nuclear agreement. “It just validated a lot of what we already thought was that Iran was being let go for its dangerous and illegal behavior. ”

“Today was the day of the defeat of diplomacy,” she said.

The Iranian representation to the United Nations issued a statement saying that the US ambassador’s behavior at the UN was intended to cover the crimes committed by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen and repeated Deadly anti-Iranian allegations to help the aggressors in Yemen.

“Iran has repeatedly rejected US allegations that it is sending weapons to Yemen and reiterates that the three-year bombing in Yemen has caused a human catastrophe,” the Iranian mission statement told the UN.
