Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif and Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Wednesday met with Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Oceania (ESCAP) Shamshad Akhtar and discussed issues of mutual interest.
The two sides discussed various issues related to Asia and Oceania, including the need to use regional capacities and emerging regional powers to develop cooperation in economic fields and infrastructure and to strengthen trade cooperation and investment investment on the Asian continent.
The two sides also expressed their concern about the weakening of multilateralism and the destruction of international and regional institutions and arrangements and the creation of serious challenges in this regard, stressing the need to take the initiative of the United Nations, including ESCAP, to contain and prevent the damage and losses resulting from such challenges at the level of this continent.
The two sides also discussed the cooperation and support of the Islamic Republic of Iran for the ESCAP programs as part of the achievement of the development goals and the establishment of a Disaster Management Center for Asia and Oceania as a subsidiary of ESCAP in Tehran, as well as the development and implementation of ESCAP’s work program in combating dust storms in Asia and Oceania.
